What is inflammation?

Inflammation is the body’s response to both acute or chronic exposure to substances that trigger the immune system. While healthy inflammation is the body’s response to injury, chronic inflammation can lead to diseases such as heart disease, diabetes, cancer, autoimmune diseases (thyroid, arthritis, etc), psychiatric disorders, or even Alzheimer’s. Certain foods, exposure to toxins, and stress may lead to chronic inflammation and predispose an individual to disease.

You do have the ability to help manage inflammation through your diet, addressing exposure to toxins, stress reduction techniques, and restoring hormonal balance, depending on the root cause(s) of your inflammation. Through working with a functional medicine practitioner, or your health care provider along with me, as your health coach, there are ways to decrease inflammation and restore healing.

The new and exciting field of epigenetics (what turns on and off your genes) brings us hope that even if individuals are genetically predisposed to certain diseases, that the turning on or off (regulation) of those genes may be impacted by a healthy lifestyle to prevent certain diseases.
