“If you are depressed you are living in the past if you are anxious you are living in the future, if you are at peace, you are living in the present.” —Lao Tzu
Many of us dwell in the past and worry about the future. This keeps us from achieving the best health in our body, mind, and spirit. While mindfulness practices such as meditation are not easy for many, they usually reap great benefits.
If you are struggling with meditation, try Yoga, Tai Chi, Qi Gong. Mindfulness practices can also be simplified to be support your individual style and needs. Trying to see the beauty in a given moment, or thoroughly enjoy a healthy meal with family, or being attentive and actively listening to a friend or loved one are all strategies to help you stay present. Try deep breathing techniques to start off your chosen practice and get you settled into the mood.
In today’s world, we are often distracted by email, instant messages, social media, binge watching online or the fire drill of the moment. It is critically important to carve out some time in your day to really be present. This can help improve your mental perspective and attitude.
The more you stop and pay attention to being in the moment, the better skilled you will become. This will payoff the dividends in improving your mental perspective. I am sharing a mindful moment in this picture of the Annapolis waterfront. Annually we have visited for years, and I love to sit here, no matter if it is overcast or sunny to take in the peace and quiet in the morning, enjoy the sounds of the Naval Academy, and bask in the quietness and sleekness of the sailboats gliding through the harbor.
Find what brings you inner peace. Reflect on why it brings you peace and keep practicing!
